Growing Cities

2010 - Video art

This series of videos is based on the "Cities" series of drawings, abstract heaps that rhythmically grow and shrink.

The silence, in contrast to the noise of the city, refers to the reason given by John Cage, regarding the reduced listening to “noise,” at the beginning of his book Silence (1961, p. 3): “When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.”

That phrase sums it all up: when one stops to "listen" to previously imperceptible sounds and moves away from the source that generates them, one discovers their qualities and can enjoy their discourse as when we listen to a melody.
