The transformations of the day

2016 - Sound Sculpture

“...Regarding the splendid variations, the investigations have not yet concluded...” (Mario Benedetti)

Boots and shoes contain and support our weight, accompanying us through long days, leading our way. They are witnesses and evidence of our journeys, remaining intact, waiting to emerge…it is we who change and evolve.

These noble objects are presented metaphorically as possibilities, those we take elsewhere or those we keep for later. They are also like diaries, containing everything that transpired in their history. The objects depicted in the images are chosen specifically for their conceptual relationship to the individual, on a completely distorted scale. The same is true of the swarms of people that surround and comprise them.

I choose everyday objects, repeating themselves cyclically like a doubt or a desire that revolves endlessly in our thoughts. Questioning the rawest and most primal aspects of being, nothing is lacking for a person who contemplates the horizon built by nature, and yet humankind carries and confronts so many situations without pausing to look and protect what surrounds them.

It is necessary to preserve these white, boundless, pristine spaces to contrast with the teeming seas that exist within each of us. The same is true of the contrast between cities and natural wastelands; humankind is so self-absorbed that it doesn't stop to appreciate, protect, observe, and reflect on its surroundings.

Highlighting the silence/sound of the space, the sound of the wind, as John Cage mentions, regarding the reduced listening to “noise,” at the beginning of his book Silence (1961, p. 3): “When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.” That phrase sums it all up: when one stops to “listen” to previously imperceptible sounds and moves away from their source, one discovers their qualities and can enjoy their discourse as when listening to a melody played by a tonal instrument. Utilizing the sonic aspect that characterizes the place to give the works another dimension.
