2018 - Instances

On March 10, 2018, an exhibition opened showcasing a project by students of the Master's Program in Technology and Aesthetics of Electronic Arts and the Master's Program in Curating Visual Arts.

Curatorial Text

"Instances" highlights the discursive possibilities that electronic art has developed in relation to its cultural, social, and economic context, and primarily in reference to modes of production and communication. The artists appropriate methods and techniques to propose conceptual reflections and innovative materializations.

The works on display were developed within an academic setting, utilizing the media and exploring the themes inherent to the technological landscape; however, they also reveal diverse forms of exploration that raise questions about the context and paradigm within which they are situated.

Is it possible to produce critical reflections using the tools, processes, and languages provided by the very system under investigation? What limits and potentialities emerge in this realm of experimentation?

To facilitate an interpretation of the works presented in dialogue, this exhibition is structured around the following axes: Signals, Entities, and Energies.

In Signals, we find productions in which the active participation of the public shapes and gives meaning to the processes of translation, visualization, and encoding that motivated their creation. They propose new patterns of behavior and relationships that highlight the urgency of finding a space in which the viewer can position themselves and, in this way, facilitate the event.

In Entities, the creations give life to autonomous beings; on the one hand, creatures that belong to an illusionistic, scenographic tradition; on the other, a robot that does not refer to any previously known form, but whose movement depends on the visitor's body, thus establishing a kind of interdependence and complementarity between the work and the viewer.

Finally, in Energies, installations engage in dialogue that, through the search for new experiences associated with light and movement, invite us to immerse ourselves in aesthetic contemplation. There is something in these objects that celebrates perception, but also questions it when the artifact manifests itself as nature.

Part of the enigma these productions evoke lies in their interrogative nature. They are aesthetic processes forged upon the current and local state of technical and media development, but which, in their modulations, express an interest in understanding what it means to create today, when everything seems permeated by reproduction. Thus, in them, we perceive the traces of an immanent presence: that of our own time, which permeates creation with a channel of openness for self-recognition.
